About Dr. Matthis

Lee R Matthis, DC, PSP  was raised in eastern North Carolina, the son of two extraordinary educators. Fascinated from a young age at the anatomy and physiology of living things, Dr Matthis sought initially to become a surgeon, thinking that fixing people from the “outside-in” was what Healing was about.  While in high school his MeMe passed away during a routine operation. He was left with the same drive to help and teach people, but now with the additional void of not knowing how.

He spent his college career at Campbell University, and after “living in the woods” for 3 months as a student at the National Outdoor Leadership School, he found clarity in the simplicity of a life well lived.  Through this clarity, he found his Purpose: “to make a positive impact on every life I touch.”   Chiropractic, with its natural “Above-Down, Inside-Out” philosophy was the perfect vehicle for him to do so.

After finding his purpose he met his ‘favorite human’ and love of his life, Candice.  They were married in 2002 and welcomed their first child, Evan, later that year.  Dr Matthis taught 6th Grade prior to matriculating into Palmer College of Chiropractic.  During his tenure as a student, they had their second child, Garrett.  The family moved to Lake Monticello for a short stint in 2006 while finishing up Dr Matthis’s preceptorship.  Upon graduating Cum Laude, the family relocated to Christiansburg, VA.  Lee and Candice welcomed their third child, Ella, in 2007.

For 18 wonderful years, Dr Matthis built a large practice in SWVA as a member of an amazing chiropractic group dedicated to “Changing the way Healthcare is Delivered.”  As his children started to find their own purpose and paths, Lee and Candice decided to act on the family motto and tap into their “Big, Expansive life.”  They knew that Charlottesville was the perfect place for their next chapter.

If he’s not actively saving lives in the office, Dr Matthis might be found buried in a book, hiking through the woods, or floating on a river somewhere.  If you look up, you might also see him riding the clouds in his paraglider.
